Wachinyan (Wah-cheen-YAHn)- To have faith/confidence in something

Tasunke Witko (Crazy Horse), was shown in a vision that the power given to him because of his faith, is that he could never be killed by the white man. This vision showed him riding into battle without weapons, wearing a war shirt that was blessed with the power to be invincible. No matter how much his enemies shot into him, the bullets either ricocheted or were absorbed into him. He rode through his enemies without wavering and was not harmed by their bullets.
Many warriors would witness Crazy Horse riding into battle with confidence in his medicine that he would never waver. His comrades would even witness Crazy Horse standing on a hill, taking off his shirt and exposing his torso showing that there were no bullet wounds on him, and shaking out his shirt and out came the bullets that couldn’t kill him. Because of Crazy Horse’s heroism and daring attitude, calvary men would become afraid, and their Indian scouts would sing their death songs and prepare for their deaths.

As a young adult, I was reminded of this story and my wachiyan, my ability to have faith or confidence in my beliefs that no matter what negativity I encountered, Creator and my own medicine protected me. When the times are hard, you stick to your beliefs and your ceremonies because the spirits see and hear you and love you enough to spend time to protect you. They also see and hear the bad that you also put out and will also help you learn why you are supposed to go through this hard time. The people love you, and your ancestors will always have your back, but give them something great to be proud of.
Move with love, respect, and wachiyan!
