"Spread the News"
Meadowlarks are believed to speak Lakota and have always been near the camps to pick at scraps or announce the coming of the new seasons. In some cases, the meadowlark would announce when new people from outside of the camp are coming. Kind of like a dog but in the sense that it’s not a blatant alarm, but a subtle call from a bird you would normally debunk as a bird making noise.
The meadowlark is a part of Lakota stories as the one who watched as a hero named "Fallen Star Boy" fell from the sky during the night. The Meadowlark then helped the boy by speaking to him and teaching him the ways of the Lakota people and eventually sending the boy off to the nearest Lakota camp when the Meadowlark could no longer teach/take care of him.
The Meadowlark is also joked about for spreading gossip or relaying things they had heard from other people or places. The old ones say that if you do not want something secretive to be said, then make sure there aren't things nearby that can listen.
This image was manipulated from a pair of half beaded-half painted ledger paper earrings. Coup Count began adding beadwork to his original works of art in 2018 and has since continued the skill. The addition is to showcase the art-within-art and in most cases insinuate how beaded items are supposed to look in real-time, while being a part of an overall painting.
