The star design on the blanket is the Lakota Morning star.  It represents the first star that comes out at night and is also the last star to be seen before the sun comes up. It is believed that this star is a portal in which spirits use to enter this world and the spirit world. With this belief, is customary to gift a star quilt to a newly wedded couple as a sign that they are entering into a new stage in life with one another and marks a milestone of ceremonial progression.
