As a dad, we want our sons to grow up to be better than us in every way. We want the best future for them and so we take what was taught to us and continue the cycle of positive masculinity so that they can uphold our culture and people the way warriors are intended to.
Without the drummers, there cannot be any songs for the dancers to dance to. A tribe without its warriors, there will not be anyone to protect those who cannot protect themselves. To be a drummer, you have to learn all of the songs for the appropriate times and sing them the way they were handed down to you because there is prayer within the words and power within the melody. Without this knowledge, we cannot have our ceremonies or dances, and so to continue our cultural lineage we pass this knowledge to our sons so that they can continue to provide good health and prayer to our people through songs and knowledge.
When we as dads see our sons mimicking our movements that’s deeply rooted into the people we are, it is reassurance that we are doing great at being a dad.
