This painting depicts a warrior who hung himself from the side of his horse to use as a shield while shooting at a cowboy who was aiming at him.  Warriors who had war ponies were said to have been excellent horsemen.  They would have such a connection with their horse that when in battle, the horse knew how to navigate without needing much direction from their rider.  Horses were always considered to be good medicine gifted to us from the Creator for the fact that they carried us and moved large quantities when needed.  But when it came to battle, that same medicine protected the warriors for getting killed so easily.
